Why Your “Normal” Lab Work Doesn’t Explain Your Fatigue, Hormones or Bloating, And the Test That Finally Can
If you’ve ever walked out of a doctor’s office feeling dismissed or confused because your blood work came back “normal” — but your symptoms are anything but — you’re not alone.
Maybe you're:
Exhausted no matter how much you sleep
Constantly bloated, backed up, or battling gut flares
Gaining weight or losing hair for no clear reason
Feeling anxious, wired-but-tired, or emotionally fried
Struggling with heavy periods, painful PMS, or infertility
Doing “all the right things” with little to no relief
And every time you bring it up, you’re handed a supplement, a prescription, or the dreaded “everything looks fine.”
But you don’t feel fine. And that’s where HTMA testing comes in.
What Is HTMA?
HTMA stands for Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis. It’s a functional lab test that looks at the mineral content of your hair, which reflects how your body has been using and storing minerals over the past 6 to 8 weeks.
Think of it like a report card on your:
Stress resilience
Metabolism
Hormone function
Thyroid health
Gut motility
Detox ability
And more...
Unlike blood, which is tightly regulated and reflects your body’s current crisis management system, HTMA shows chronic patterns—how your body is really functioning behind the scenes.
Blood vs. HTMA: Why You Need Both
🩸 Blood labs = “What’s happening right now”
Your blood tightly regulates nutrients in order to maintain homeostasis. It will rob Peter to pay Paul to keep levels “normal,” even if that means pulling minerals from your tissues.
That’s why your magnesium might look fine in blood, even if you’re severely depleted.
💇♀️ HTMA = “What’s been happening over time”
Your hair stores minerals that have been shuttled out of your bloodstream and into tissue. This gives us insight into mineral trends, metabolic rate, stress levels, and detox efficiency over weeks—not just hours.
Put simply:
Blood tells us how your body is compensating.
HTMA tells us what it’s been sacrificing.
When used together, these two tests give a full picture of both current function and long-term depletion or overload.
Why Minerals Matter More Than You Think
Minerals are like spark plugs for your body. They activate enzymes, regulate hormones, manage your stress response, and support every system—nervous, digestive, endocrine, immune.
But they don’t work in isolation.
Minerals operate in ratios. They can antagonize each other (too much calcium can suppress magnesium, for example) or depend on cofactors to function (like copper and vitamin A are needed for iron to be used properly).
When one mineral goes off, it doesn’t just impact one system—it ripples across your whole body.
Here are just a few examples:
Mineral. It’s role. And what happens if it's Off
Magnesium. Calms the nervous system, regulates bowels, and supports detox. When this mineral is off it causes constipation, anxiety, insomnia, and fatigue.
Potassium. Regulates energy, blood sugar, stomach acid, and cellular hydration. When this mineral is off it causes fatigue, poor digestion, and adrenal stress.
Sodium. Helps retain hydration, maintain blood pressure, and regulate stress. When this mineral is off you can experience dizziness, fatigue, and weak detox pathways
Calcium. Needed for bone health but also nervous system regulation. High tissue calcium = burnout, and thyroid suppression
Copper. Supports estrogen detox, iron movement, and liver health. Deficiency = iron overload, heavy periods, and mood swings
Zinc. Immune support, digestive enzyme function, and skin health. Deficiency = poor digestion, skin issues, and PMS.
The Iron Problem No One Talks About
One of the biggest mistakes I see is women being told they’re “iron deficient” based solely on blood work—and then being put on iron supplements that make them feel worse.
Here’s what’s often missing from that story:
Iron needs copper and vitamin A to move through the body and into hemoglobin.
Without those cofactors, iron becomes bio-unavailable—it gets stuck in your organs (especially the liver) instead of being used.
You can have low ferritin but still be functionally overloaded with iron.
Taking more iron in this case can cause inflammation, fatigue, constipation, and more hormone issues.
HTMA reveals mineral patterns that suggest whether iron is moving properly, whether copper is bioavailable, and whether detox pathways are overwhelmed.
This test has been a game-changer for women with:
Heavy, painful periods
“Unexplained” anemia
No energy despite eating well and supplementing
Who Is HTMA For?
HTMA can be eye-opening for so many types of women, especially if you:
Feel like no one is listening to your symptoms
Have done extensive bloodwork but still feel unwell
Are dealing with hormonal chaos (PMS, PCOS, infertility, perimenopause)
Struggle with thyroid symptoms (weight gain, hair loss, sluggishness)
Are tired but can’t sleep—or wired all the time
Battle bloating, constipation, slow digestion
Have burnout or chronic stress that just won’t lift
Want to prep your body for pregnancy or postpartum
Are recovering from illness, infection, or mold
HTMA is also ideal if you’ve tried gut protocols, hormone programs, or detoxes—and still don’t feel better.
Because here’s the truth:
You can’t out-supplement a mineral imbalance.
You can’t fix hormones until you fix minerals.
And you can’t improve gut health if your cells are starving.
Why I Combine HTMA + Blood Labs in My Practice
HTMA is powerful but it’s even more effective when we pair it with a blood panel. That’s why my Foundational Reset includes both.
We map out:
Your stored mineral patterns (HTMA)
Your circulating nutrient levels (blood)
Your liver enzymes, iron panel, thyroid markers, and inflammation indicators
Together, we build a personalized plan that addresses your gut, hormones, stress, and detox from the inside out.
How to Get Started
Right now, I’m offering a few spots for my HTMA Analysis Package.
🧬 What’s included:
